8 Famous People Who Died Without a Will

In Louisiana, a handwritten will is entirely valid.

In my view, something is better than nothing.

So don't wait to get a lawyer to at least do a handwritten will. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Write it on a plain piece of paper. (I prefer lined paper because my handwriting is bad enough without having to figure out if I am writing straight.)

  • Put the full date at the top. Example: May 19, 2022

  • Let anyone who picks it up knows what it is. Example: This is my last will and testament.

  • Say how you want your property to go: Example. When I die, I leave all my property to my two children equally.

  • Designate an executor. An executor is a person you want to be in charge of getting your property where you want it to go. Example: I name my husband, Eric, the executor of my will.

  • Sign it at the end and don't write anything after it.

  • Also, don't have anyone else sign it.

So now that you've got a handwritten will, is that it?

No.

Think of this as the first step in the estate planning process, not the final step.
